Detailed description.

The Bobal is widespread in viticulture in the Central Spain and Levante Region and specifically in the Utiel-Requena Designation of Origin.

Synonymies

It is also known as: Boal, Bogal, Boral, Bovatí, Canonao, Provechón, Requena, Requeno.

Its Clusters:

  • They are large, with very marked shoulders.
  • Very compact, with berries of uniform size.
  • With short and well lignified peduncle.

Berries:

  • Medium to large in size, spherical in shape, occasionally flattened.
  • With very dark epidermis, blue-black.
  • Thick and consistent skin, which gives it resistance to diseases.
  • With uncolored, soft and very juicy pulp.
  • It has a fruity flavor that tends to herbaceous.

Strains:

  • Very vigorous, lying habit.
  • Its wood is very thick and reddish brown.
  • It is characterized by its high fertility and high production.

Phenology:

  • It presents a late sprouting.
  • Its maturation is medium-late.

Bobal agricultural characteristics:

  • Bobal is not very sensitive to downy mildew and fungal diseases of wood.
  • It is sensitive to the cluster moth.
  • It is a vine variety that is very resistant to drought.
  • Due to its resistance to pests and diseases and its adaptation to hot and dry climates, it is an optimal variety for organic viticulture.

Oenological Potential:

  • Bobal grapes give wines with a good aroma, an intense dark cherry color with violet tones, intense aromas with herbaceous and fruity tones, and relatively high acidity.
  • Suitable for rosé wines that are very aromatic, fruity and pleasant.
  • The reds, with a high layer, are astringent, lively and full-bodied.
  • Good results are being obtained in the production of fresh and fruity rosés.
  • Suitable for aging in barrels.
  • It is often used as a base for excellent young red wines.
