Technical Data Sheet for Godello Plants

Origin

  • The Godello grape is a white variety native to Galicia, in the northwest of Spain.
  • It has gained great relevance in regions such as the denominations of origin Valdeorras, Ribeira Sacra, and El Bierzo.
  • Its quality and adaptability have been key factors in its growing demand both within and outside Galicia.

Bunches and Berries

  • Godello plants produce small bunches, with medium to high density, and with a lightly lignified peduncle.
  • The berries have an elliptical shape and are greenish-yellow in color, with thick skin covered in a waxy coating (pruina).
  • Bunch size: Small, compact.
  • Berry size: Small, uniform, elliptical in profile.
  • Pulp: Firm, juicy, with an intense and persistent aroma.

Vines and Cultivation Characteristics

  • The Godello vines are vigorous, with an upright growth habit and early budding, making them suitable for temperate and humid climates.
  • They are sensitive to certain diseases, so proper management is necessary.
  • Low sensitivity to botrytis.
  • Sensitive to powdery mildew and excoriosis.
  • Moderate sensitivity to downy mildew.
  • Despite these susceptibilities, Godello plants have high fertility and adapt well to various pruning systems, though long pruning maximizes yields without sacrificing fruit quality.

Planted Area

In Spain, Godello cultivation covers 1,134 hectares, with 94% concentrated in Galicia and the rest in Castilla y León. This expansion has been driven by the growing interest in high-quality white wines.

Aromatic and Structural Potential of Godello Plants

  • The Godello grape is known for producing wines with a high aromatic intensity and excellent structure.
  • Its wines exhibit a high alcohol content and a perfect balance between acidity and body.
  • These wines are known for their freshness, but also for their ability to age well.
  • The wines show notes of citrus fruits and stone fruits (apple, peach).
  • Aromatically, they feature hints of fresh herbs and minerality, characteristic of Galician soils.
